Book cover titled “The Five Mental Challenges of Accomplishing a 2,000-Plus-Mile Thru-Hike” with Appalachian Trail book image

The Five Mental Challenges of Accomplishing a 2,000-Plus-Mile Thru-Hike is a free 8-page booklet by Triple Crown thru-hiker Rand Clark. Drawing on his 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail hike from Maine to Georgia, it gives one page to each of the five fears he faced: starting, night hiking, facing fears, the unknown, and “hitting the wall.” Each page shares what the fear felt like on the trail and the lesson he learned from facing it. Those lessons reach well beyond hiking and apply to any big goal in everyday life. The booklet also points readers to the matching chapters in his book, Appalachian Trail, God and Life: A Physical, Mental, and Spiritual Journey.
